Matusz Exits Early In Loss

The Birds were given yet another scare on Saturday afternoon when Brian Matusz had to leave the game in the sixth inning of a 4-2 loss to the Washington Nationals.

Matusz (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings, fanning five. Matusz allowed a solo home run in the first inning but settled down and held the Nats scoreless until things fell apart in the sixth...

Matusz recorded one quick out and then gave up a double, a homer and a single before being pulled from the game with what was determined to be hamstring cramps...it was certainly a frightening moment to watch Matusz hobble into the dugout, but it appears he should be ready to make his next scheduled start.

It looked like the O's were in business after Adam Jones smacked his 10th homer of the season in the first inning, giving the Birds an early 1-0 lead. But the O's were kept off the scoreboard until J.J. Hardy slapped an RBI single in the seventh. Both clubs picked up eight hits on the afternoon, but the Nats were able to bunch a few together when it mattered.

The O's (31-37) are now a season-worst six games under .500 and need a win on Sunday afternoon to avoid being swept by the Nationals. Chris Jakubauskas takes the mound for the Birds...
