Guthrie Falls To Royals

Jeremy Guthrie looked nothing like the pitcher who shut down the Yankees in his last start, and the O's offense did little to help him out in a 6-2 loss to the Royals on Wednesday night.

Guthrie (5-15) allowed a run in the first and two more in the second before settling in. The Birds scored once in the first and again in the third to make it a one-run game.

That's how the score stood until Guthrie served up a three-run bomb to Billy Butler on a 3-0 count in the bottom of the seventh, almost assuring the Orioles would not be able to start a winning streak. Guthrie ended his outing after allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks over seven innings, striking out two.

The offense managed just four hits throughout the game, two in the first inning and two more in the eighth...the Birds actually loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the eighth, but J.J. Hardy struck out swinging and Nick Markakis grounded out to end the only real scoring threat of the game.

Zach Britton takes the mound on Thursday night...the Orioles have lost six of nine on this 10-game road-trip and can only hope for a series win before heading to Baltimore for a 10-game homestand beginning Friday night against Toronto.
