Jeremy Guthrie and the O's got spanked by the Rays 8-2 in front of a national audience on Saturday afternoon.
As usual, Guthrie received no run support, and left with his team trailing. What was different this time around? The Birds were down by seven runs when Guthrie hit the showers...
Guthrie (1-5) lasted just five innings, allowing seven runs off ten hits and a walk while fanning four. After giving up a run in the first, Guthrie was tagged with two three-run blasts, once in the third inning and again in the fifth. Guthrie's ERA ballooned from a solid 3.00 to a mediocre 4.09 in the loss.
The Birds' bats continued to stay cold...they managed just five hits and were unable to take advantage of ten walks given up by Tampa's staff. The O's didn't get on the board until the seventh inning, and scored once more in the bottom of the ninth, but the hole was just too deep to crawl out of.
The O's wrap-up the series on Sunday afternoon...Brad Bergesen takes the mound as the Orioles look to avoid a home sweep at the hands of the Rays.
