Jeremy Guthrie actually lowered his ERA in Thursday night's 3-1 loss to the Twins...how sad is that?
Guthrie looked almost as good as he did on Opening Day, giving up just two runs on seven hits over seven innings, walking none, fanning four and hitting two batters. Guthrie (1-3) gave up a solo home run to Jim Thome in the second inning but kept the Twins off the board until allowing another run in the sixth. Michael Gonzalez's struggles continued...he allowed two hits and a run (a solo homer) in just 2/3 of an inning in relief. Jeremy Accardo pitched the final frame(s) without allowing a hit.
Once again, it was the offense that betrayed Guthrie...the Birds managed just seven hits (three went for doubles) in the loss. Both clubs went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, but it was the O's lack of timely hitting that ultimately did them in. Nick Markakis continued to struggle, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout and stranding five, lowering his average to .203 this season.
The O's still managed to split the four-game set against the Twins and now take on the Yankees and Red Sox for three-game series at Camden Yards. Brad Bergesen takes on C.C. Sabathia on Friday night...the Birds are 8-10 while the first-place Yankees boast a 10-6 record...here's hoping the standings look a bit different come Sunday...Let's Go O's!
